Do you really understand how people actually use a search engine? So, this question is so important in planning out your digital marketing strategy. Because so many of us use search engines in so many different ways.One of the ways we use search engines is to ask it questions:• Should I go on a trip? • What is the value of something I’m looking for? • Is there a local business near me that provides a service?So, that is one way we use search engines. But another way we use search engines is to get ideas. We think we hear something and we plug it into a search engine – most likely Google – and we get back other results and it gives us more ideas. So now, it’s not that I’m just asking a question. Now I’m kind of trying to research or figure stuff out and I’m using Google as a way to give me information. One of the things a lot of people do with Google – especially on desktop – is they start typing right into the search box and when they do that they look at the recommendations that are coming below. It’s probably why nowadays you’re hearing the term that Google is now more of a recommendation engine than just a search engine. Because customers like you and me are going to Google for finding businesses, but researching ideas, discovering something new, going there for news… There’s a whole bunch of reasons we use this tool. Why does this matter? Right? Well, one of the reasons this matters – so much – to all of us is because we have to understand the tool that our clients and customers use at the point they are in, in their journey.For example, if they’re just starting out, they’re not quite sure what they’re looking for – that top of funnel – then they might be using Google one way.Whereas, if they’re a little further down – consideration or awareness part of the funnel – they may be using Google a different way.This is extremely important when you’re planning out your content. You do want to think about, not just writing content around keywords or key phrases, but around where your client or customer might be in their buying journey. And that is going to help you better understand what to plan for your content and to better understand how to start to move up and rank a little more effectively on Google rather than just chasing after one or two words, which isn’t how any of us use Google.
